When I heard the announcement that Paula Deen had type 2 diabetes, I was anything but surprised After all, she was playing Russian roulette with her health all these years

I tend to gravitate more to healthy cooking than to greasy, fat-laden gastronomic atrocities—hence my basic naiveté concerning what Deen was all about I first became aware of her existence when visiting Savannah, Georgia, and seeing the endless lines for The Lady and Sons, her ever-popular restaurant But I’ll admit to being just a tad curious to see what the hoopla was all about So, the other day while on the treadmill at my gym, I switched on the Food Network There was her show—how serendipitous!

Sleep problems increase risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity, study shows

People who suffer from sleep disturbances are at major risk for obesity, diabetes, and coronary artery disease, according to new research from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.  For the first time in such a large and diverse sample, analyzing the data of over 130,000 people, the new research also indicates that general sleep disturbance (difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, and/or sleeping too much) may play a role in the development of cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. The study is published online ahead of print in the Journal of Sleep Research.

Photography competition closing date extended

The theme of the competition is Brighter Futures and there are entry categories for those aged under and over 18.

The photographs will be judged by a panel of professionals including businessman Charles Skene OBE, Royal photographer, Donald Stewart and lead officer for the Aberdeenshire Alcohol Drugs Partnership, Wayne Gault. The closing date for entries has been extended to 8 February and an award ceremony will be held on 16 February where prizes will be issued, including a digital camera for the top prize.

HEALTH Reports Update on Barrington Pertussis Outbreak

On December 22, HEALTH received a report from a Barrington pediatrician that a student had been diagnosed with pertussis. As of today, there have been 21 cases of pertussis confirmed in Barrington. The number of confirmed cases in Rhode Island is consistent with outbreaks occurring nationally and regionally in Connecticut, Maine, and Massachusetts.

Due to the outbreak and after consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), HEALTH hosted vaccination clinics as an ongoing effort to prevent the further spread of pertussis in the Barrington community.
