Zocor Receives New FDA Warning Label

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ordered a new warning label for the cholesterol medication Zocor (simvastatin), saying that the drug has an increased risk of muscle damage (myopathy) when taken at its highest dosage. Researchers in two different studies have found muscle damage in people taking 80 mg of Zocor, especially in the first year of treatment. FDA officials say these findings suggest that this dose should only be given to people who have been using Zocor for more than 12 months without damage, and not to new patients. People taking this dose of Zocor should speak to their healthcare providers before making any changes to their medication.

Experts Concerned About Rising HIV Rates Among Poor, Minorities news

TUESDAY, Aug. 16 (HealthDay News) — HIV/AIDS experts gathering in Atlanta this week expressed growing concerns over a rise in rates of HIV infection among the nation’s poor and minorities.

New data released Tuesday at the National HIV Prevention Conference by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 19 percent of gay and bisexual men, 9 percent of intravenous drug users and 2 percent of low-income heterosexuals were infected with HIV. This compares with an overall infection rate in the United States of only 0.47 percent.

Food Pyramid Replaced by Half-Plate of Vegetables, Fruit

The U.S. has unveiled a new healthy eating icon called MyPlate, to replace the older and more controversial food pyramid. The MyPlate icon reminds Americans to make sure that half of their plate is filled with fruit and vegetables, while a quarter of the plate is filled with grains, including whole grains. The new image also puts focus on choosing lean protein, healthy fats, and lower-sodium foods.
