Photography competition closing date extended

22 January, 2012

The theme of the competition is Brighter Futures and there are entry categories for those aged under and over 18.

The photographs will be judged by a panel of professionals including businessman Charles Skene OBE, Royal photographer, Donald Stewart and lead officer for the Aberdeenshire Alcohol Drugs Partnership, Wayne Gault. The closing date for entries has been extended to 8 February and an award ceremony will be held on 16 February where prizes will be issued, including a digital camera for the top prize.

Martina Hickey-Laing, Service Manager at the Fraserburgh centre, said:

“Our service users were offered the opportunity to complete a course in digital photography where the Banff and Buchan College tutor came to the project in August 2011. They had such a positive experience that we wanted to explore using photography further.

“A lot of our service users feel that they have really lost their place in the local community due to their past or ongoing issues with drug or alcohol mis-use. Taking part in the college course helped our service users grow in confidence, secure qualifications and engage with the community by helping them to express themselves in a creative way.

“The participants held an exhibition of their work last year and are now managing the competition which is open to the people of Aberdeenshire.”

The Fraserburgh Families service helps young children under five whose families are affected by parental drug and alcohol misuse. The staff build relationships with adult family members offering direct support to parents at times of need, giving them practical help in caring for their children in the most safe and nurturing way they can. As well as spending quality time with their children, it also supports parents to re-engage with local community groups.

The service works alongside the Aberdeenshire Alcohol and Drugs Partnership to raise awareness of drug and alcohol use and its impact on parenting.

Wayne Gault, Lead Officer for the Partnership, said:

“The Alcohol and Drugs Partnership exists to draw everyone together to collectively figure out the best approach to alcohol and drugs in Aberdeenshire. It’s essential that we include the views of people who have been affected by substance misuse issues. This competition is another way of capturing their experiences and the winning entries will be included in the new alcohol and drug strategy for Aberdeenshire planned for publication later in the year.

“People can and do recover from alcohol and other drugs to lead healthier, happier, fuller lives. We’re keen to hear folk’s views so we can more effectively help people to recover sustainably from an addiction and rebuild their lives.”
