How to Use Yoga to Unwind

3 August, 2010

Instructions

Things You’ll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  1. Step 1

Pick a quiet location to do yoga exercises. Distractions will prevent you from relaxing. Some good locations might be your bedroom, a quiet park or at the beach at sunrise.

  2. Step 2

Take a yoga mat to put on the ground. Many yoga exercises require flat, horizontal positions. A mat will keep you clean, and prevent your body from getting bruised up. They run fairly inexpensive and can be found at any sporting goods store.

  3. Step 3

Perform stretches you feel comfortable with. To unwind, all you really need to do is breathe, stretch and focus on nothing. It may sound easy, but emptying your mind takes focus. The things going on in your life try to creep up in your mind. It takes practice to push them away. Concentrate on how your body feels as you stretch, and remember to breathe.

  4. Step 4

Start with simple stretches, then move into more complicated yoga poses. A few simple poses include: Butterfly pose, Cat pose, Cobra pose and Dog pose. These moves involve simple stretch poses that release muscle tension. Hold each pose for 20 to 30 seconds. Breathe deeply as you concentrate on what your body is feeling.

  5. Step 5

Play soothing soft music as you do yoga. Soft music keeps you moving in a flow. It may also help you concentrate on what you are doing. You can find yoga CD’s for sale in stores and online.
